March 20, Full Review…. View All Critic Reviews Mar 09, It's hard to heap more superlatives on this film given all those that it's received from countless critics and viewers over the years.
It's certainly worthy of them. The story is perfect. The characters and acting are memorable. Director Akira Kurosawa has a fantastic sense of pace, and even at three and a half hours, every scene seems important.
We're transported to 16th century Japan, a time when bandits terrorize the countryside and a village of farmers, but the film's themes are timeless.
As epic as the movie is, with a samurai team of six assembled one by one by its leader Takashi Shimura , it would not have been the same without the seventh, a samurai-wannabe played by Toshiro Mifune.
He's brash, exuberant, funny, brave, foolish, and heartfelt. He's in many brilliant scenes, but my favorite is when he describes what tricks the farmers may be up to, and we gradually understand that he himself was a farmer's son, with a tragic past.
His performance is right up there with Brando in terms of intensity and honesty. Kurosawa is smart in so many ways here, one of which is to orient the viewer to the village and its surroundings by showing the leader of the group plan its defense.
In addition to Mifune's character, he also lightens the mood with the forbidden love between the young samurai apprentice Isao Kimura and a young woman masquerading as a boy Keiko Tsushima.
Their scene in the woodland flowers is gorgeous. I love how the samurai are as tough as nails, but know they don't need to show it, and instead exude a sense of calm, playfulness, and understanding.
With the exception of an extremely skillful and solemn swordsman Seiji Miyaguchi , they smile in many scenes, and all of them accept the difficulty and danger of their fate.
Despite their skill, they do not seek out violence. They are calm in moments of peace, intelligent in planning for battle, and brave and unflinching under attack.
While the film and these character types have been emulated many times over the years, the difference between these samurai and western action heroes is still stark, and refreshing.
In this little village and the situation it faces, we see a microcosm of the world. Despite the mythic quality of a small outnumbered band of heroic samurai, the film has an authenticity to it.
We see all of the very natural reactions to pressure. There are themes you might expect: honor, duty, discipline, and that sort of thing, but at its core, the message is the need to stand up to evil, and the great debt that we owe to those who have done so.
Antonius B Super Reviewer. Sep 22, When it comes to all-time classic films, the title Seven Samurai gets thrown around a lot. Released in , spawning many different versions as time went on, most notably the recreation known as The Magnificent Seven, Seven Samurai is not just your average epic.
Taking its time to tell its brilliant, yet simple story to its audience, it was clear that director Akira Kurosawa expected a much maturer demographic.
Released over 60 years ago, films of the 's and 's are very rarely talked about, with the exceptions of a few everlasting ones.
People say that the likes of Citizen Kane or The Wizard of Oz are the best of the best from those decades, but not enough people talk about Kurosawa's masterpiece in Seven Samurai.
Here is why I believe it is still one of the greatest films out there, even today. While it is without question that its minute running time can be daunting to some viewers, it just goes to show that the attention span for cinema has dwindled over the years.
Upon its initial release, films featured intermissions approximately halfway through, thus giving the audience a bit of time to let everything sink in.
Today's films have to rush everything into a maximum of two hours or its audience will begin to lose interest. It is sad but true, with the exception of a few greats.
Giving just enough screen time to each and every one of the main characters, this film balances its cast perfectly. Utilizing its action sequences just as things may start getting a little boring, Kurosawa knows exactly where and when to place every scene.
I admire this film for every risk it takes, and every one that it doesn't. Although I mention that its pacing is slower due to the fact that it focusses on every character in order to make you care about them, Seven Samurai is also no stranger to exciting action sequences.
Even though it is still brutal for the time, the shots composed throughout every epic action sequence feels rich and cared for.
Not a frame of this film occurs without purpose and I cannot admire a film that does that enough. Seven Samurai makes you feel emotions that you never thought you would feel from watching a samurai epic.
In the end, I was sucked in and put on the edge of my seat. Sure, watching this film nowadays, you can see the outcome from a mile away, due to the fact that many films have borrowed its story elements over the years, but for its time, the ending is simply beautiful.
The plot to this film is simple. A group of bandits threaten to steal all of the rice being harvested by farmers.
Afraid of losing everything, they recruit seven samurai warriors to train with them in order to strike when the time comes.
With a plot like this, you are looking at a 90 minute running time for any average movie with this plot nowadays, but the fact that this film takes its time to flesh out every character and tastefully stage its action sequences so that you care about everything that is going on, makes for even even greater experience.
There are endless things to love about this classic picture. In the end, this is a film that I can easily recommend to any cinema lover who doesn't mind a longer film.
If you do not like sitting through lengthy films and you do not enjoy subtitles or cannot speak the languages spoken throughout the film, it may not be for you.
That being said, this is a rich looking epic, with incredible direction, great performances for its time, a simple story told with vigour and care, as well as pacing that flies by if you are able to follow everything that is happening.
I love this film from start to finish and it definitely deserves recognition as one of the greats. I quite simply do not have anything to complain about here.

A veteran samurai, who has fallen on hard times, answers a village's request for protection from bandits. He gathers 6 other samurai to help him, and they teach the townspeople how to defend themselves, and they supply the samurai with three small meals a day.
The film culminates in a giant battle when 40 bandits attack the village. This is my favorite Kurosawa film, the man was a true master of the cinematic arts.
If you have never seen a Kurosawa film definetly make this your first. To quickly summarize, a poor Japanese village hires 7 Samurai to protect it from being raided by bandits.
Don't get me wrong there is way more to it than that, I just dont want to give anything away. This is an intense and emotional movie that hooks you from the first scene and keeps you on the line till it is all over.
The battle scene at the end is in true Kurosawa form. The acting is outstanding by everyone involved from the main characters all the way down to the very last extra.
Of course the best way to see any film, especially a Kurosawa film is on the big screen if you are able to. Beautifully filmed, in black and white, anyone familiar with Kurosawa's work has to wonder visually how much more gorgeous it could have been had Kurosawa had the option of color in The camera use is brilliant and every scene is balanced visually.
This film is also the first one to use "the wipe" as a way of changing from one scene to another. This technique was later used by George Lucas in his Star Wars movies.
I would also recommend the DVD version that has the commentary option by the Japanese cinema expert if anyone is interested in a deeper understanding of the "hows" and "whys" of Kurosawa's film making.

They are overheard by a farmer, whereupon the villagers ask Gisaku, the village elder and miller , for advice. He states that he once saw a village that hired samurai and remained untouched by raiders, and declares they should also hire samurai to defend them.
Since they have no money and can only offer food as payment, Gisaku advises them to find hungry samurai. The villagers then ask for help, and after initial reluctance, Kambei agrees.
Kikuchiyo, a wild and unpredictable man who carries a family scroll that he claims proves he is a samurai though the birth date on it is for a teenager , follows the group despite attempts to drive him away.
On arrival, the samurai find the villagers cowering in their homes, refusing to greet them. Feeling insulted by such a cold reception, Kikuchiyo rings the village alarm, prompting the villagers to come out of hiding and beg for protection.
The samurai are both pleased and amused by this, and accept him as a comrade-in-arms. Slowly the samurai and farmers begin to trust each other as they train together.
However, the six professional samurai are angered when Kikuchiyo brings them armor and weapons, which the villagers most likely acquired by killing injured or dying samurai.
Kikuchiyo retorts in a rage that samurai are responsible for battles, raids, taxation and forced labor that devastate the villagers' lives.
By so doing, he reveals his origin as an orphaned farmer's son. The samurai's anger turns to shame. Three bandit scouts are spotted. Two are killed, while another reveals the location of their camp.
Against the wishes of the samurai, the villagers kill the prisoner. The samurai burn down the bandits' camp in a pre-emptive strike.
Rikichi, a troubled villager who helps the samurai, breaks down when he sees his wife, who had apparently been kidnapped and made a concubine in a previous raid.
On seeing Rikichi, she walks back into the burning hut. Heihachi is killed by musket fire while trying to save Rikichi, whose grief is compounded.
When the bandits finally attack, they are confounded by new fortifications, including a moat and wooden fence.
Several bandits are killed following Kambei's plan of allowing single horse-mounted bandits to enter the village, where they are trapped and killed by groups of farmers armed with bamboo spears.
Gisaku's family tries to save the old man when he refuses to abandon his mill on the outskirts of the village. All perish but a lone baby rescued by Kikuchiyo, who breaks down in tears, as it reminds him how he was orphaned.
The bandits possess three matchlock firearms. An envious Kikuchiyo abandons his post—and his contingent of farmers—to bring back another. He is chastised by Kambei because, while he was gone, the bandits killed some of his farmers.
The bandits attack again, and Gorobei is slain. That night, Kambei predicts that, due to their dwindling numbers, the bandits will make one last all-out attack.
He beats her until Kambei and the villagers intervene. The next morning in a torrential downpour, Kambei orders that the remaining thirteen bandits be allowed into the village.
An enraged Kikuchiyo charges in and is shot, but kills the bandit chief before dying. The rest of the invaders are slain. The three surviving samurai later watch from the funeral mounds of their comrades as the joyful villagers sing whilst planting their crops.
Kambei reflects that it is another pyrrhic victory for the warriors: "In the end we lost this battle too.
The victory belongs to the peasants, not to us. Akira Kurosawa had originally wanted to direct a film about a single day in the life of a samurai.
Later, in the course of his research, he discovered a story about samurai defending farmers. According to actor Toshiro Mifune, the film was originally going to be called Six Samurai , with Mifune playing the role of Kyuzo.
During the six-week scriptwriting process, Kurosawa and his screenwriters realized that "six sober samurai were a bore—they needed a character that was more off-the-wall".
Long before it was released, the film had already become a topic of wide discussion. Toho Studios closed down production at least twice. Each time, Kurosawa calmly went fishing, reasoning that the studio had already heavily invested in the production and would allow him to complete the picture.
The film's final battle scene, originally scheduled to be shot at the end of summer, was shot in February in near-freezing temperatures.
Mifune later recalled that he had never been so cold in his life. Kurosawa and the writers were innovative in refining the theme of the assembly of heroic characters to perform a mission.
According to Michael Jeck's DVD commentary , Seven Samurai was among the first films to use the now-common plot element of the recruiting and gathering of heroes into a team to accomplish a specific goal, a device used in later films such as The Guns of Navarone , Sholay , the western remake The Magnificent Seven , and Pixar's animated film A Bug's Life.
Kurosawa refused to shoot the peasant village at Toho Studios and had a complete set constructed at Tagata on the Izu Peninsula , Shizuoka.
Although the studio protested the increased production costs, Kurosawa was adamant that "the quality of the set influences the quality of the actors' performances For this reason, I have the sets made exactly like the real thing.
It restricts the shooting but encourages that feeling of authenticity. It was just the kind of picture that is impossible to make in this country.
Through the creative freedom provided by the studio, Kurosawa made use of telephoto lenses , which were rare in , as well as multiple cameras which allowed the action to fill the screen and place the audience right in the middle of it.
His method was to put one camera in the most orthodox shooting position, another camera for quick shots and a third camera "as a kind of guerrilla unit".
This method made for very complicated shoots, for which Kurosawa choreographed the movement of all three cameras by using diagrams.
Initially Junzo Sasamori of the Ono-ha Itto-ryu was working along with Sugino, but he was asked by the Ministry of Education to teach in Europe during production.
During filming Kurosawa quickly earned a reputation with his crew as the "world's greatest editor" because of his practice of editing late at night throughout the shooting.
