Watts throws herself into the project, much like a first responder to an emergency. This shift in genre is an ambitious gamble, and I don't think it plays out successfully.

Ben Sachs. It's a toss-up between Kleenex and the sick bag at first, but later on the plot veers into improbably stupid territory and it's best just to bail out altogether.

Kate Muir. Whatever it thinks it is, it's a whole lot less than sensible, and several planets away from, you know, good. Tim Robey. The Book Of Henry is a very bizarre affair, stuck in treacherous waters between kids' movie, terminal illness melodrama and hardboiled film noir.

Geoffrey Macnab. Wow is The Book of Henry a shining, multifaceted disaster. Christopher Hooton. I do agree that things could've been handled with a little more subtlety, grace or tact Damond Fudge.

The truth is, while I don't think I can quite recommend the film, I appreciated its attempt to try something slightly insane, to take turns that most mainstream movies don't dare.

Steven Prokopy. The few pleasures within The Book of Henry come from the ever-present feeling that at any moment something grandly idiotic could occur out of the blue.

On this front the film absolutely delivers. Dan Scully. Overall, The Book of Henry is confusing and so poorly executed, that not even its talented cast can save it.

Katie Smith-Wong. This is a tear jerker film with good intentions, but there's an awful lot going on, including several messages.

Linda and Al Lerner. Naomi Watts can't save a drama built on a poorly constructed scheme of something a normal thinking adult would have brushed off immediately.

If you wanted to badly explain the plot, then it could be summed up as a dead baby scavenger hunt. Chris Sawin. Top Box Office. More Top Movies Trailers.

The winning writers are an impressive mix of celebrated names and new, emerging voices. Their stories evoke lives both near and distant, in settings ranging from Jamaica, Houston, and Hawaii to a Turkish coal mine and a drought-ridden Northwestern farm, and feature an engaging array of characters, including Laotian refugees, a Columbian kidnap victim, an eccentric Irish schoolteacher, a woman haunted by a house that cleans itself, and a strangely long-lived rabbit.

The uniformly breathtaking stories are accompanied by essays from the eminent jurors on their favorites, observations from the winning writers on what inspired them, and an extensive resource list of magazines.

Henry Prize Stories Sep 21, Imran Ahmed rated it liked it Shelves: fiction , short-stories. I enjoy reading short stories. They are compact and pack a punch.

As a reader, a realistic, even melancholy story resonates with me. So when I came across this collection of short stories at my local library it didn't take much convincing for me to borrow.

Ok, so no reader will like each and every story in a compilation. Nonetheless, I expected more from such an exalted collection.

To be sure, there were a several standouts which made reading the entire book worthwhile. The collection is noticea I enjoy reading short stories.

The collection is noticeable for another reason, the geographical breadth of the authors. While all stories must be written originally in English quite a few are set in non-English speaking countries such as Laos, Turkey, etc.

Despite my three stars I recommend this book to readers whom enjoy short stories. Finding that one special story makes the effort to read all the others worthwhile!

Feb 28, AJ rated it really liked it. As might be expected with an anthology like this, there's a range of story, and for me, at least, it is pretty near impossible to imagine thoroughly enjoying each and every story within that range.

However, there were several that really shone masterfully. No Spanish, about a father who decrees that his Basque family will speak only that language, now that it has been outlawed, despite the fact none of them speak their ancestral tongue at the moment.

It's comic and sad and absurd and political, As might be expected with an anthology like this, there's a range of story, and for me, at least, it is pretty near impossible to imagine thoroughly enjoying each and every story within that range.

It's comic and sad and absurd and political, the daughter rebelling against the rebellion. Girl of Few Seasons was a heart-breaker.

An impoverished young Hawaiian man carries the guilt for his sister's mental infirmity to the point where he opts to serve in Vietnam only so it will allow him a flight to the island where his sister is confined in an institution he has been unable to visit.

Julia and Sunny was an enjoyable change of pace, written in second person plural that felt natural despite its off-centred sound to the ear.

It's about a couple that witnesses the breakup of two of their best friends. It's such a smooth read that the lack of real gravity for me, at least in this story made it all the more of a marvel at how compelled I was to turn the pages.

Omakase was similar, a small story of a couple going out to dinner at a Japanese restaurant, infusing racial undercurrents and the child of immigrant influence to successfully build tension in the relationship, so that the reader wonders if this couple will survive.

Unstuck was also intriguing, a woman who believes her house is haunted, quite possibly by the unseen person who rescued after she'd gotten stuck in a tight slot canyon.

Aguacero, about the daughter of Colombian immigrants encountering a Colombian ex-pat, both of them traumatized by what their ancestral country's cruel traumas, and therefore drawn to each other despite the age difference and the young woman's skepticism about the man's motives.

And Lagomorph, about a man's relationship with a rabbit. OK, the family rabbit, but now the kids are gone, and he and his wife have divorced, and this rabbit continues to linger on somewhat enigmatically, and a certain ambivalence in the man's affection for it perhaps mirroring the ambivalence he felt in his marriage once he and his wife were alone with each other.

It was a diverse collection, with enough successful stories, in an array of styles, that I found it really satisfying despite the few stories that didn't grab me.

Jan 18, Mobius rated it it was ok. The best story was "Prime". The other stories ranged from boring to okay. Two interesting ones were "The Shew Tree" and "Lagomorph".

The rest are just not particularly profound. Oct 06, Sara rated it really liked it Shelves: short-stories. This was an ARC provided in exchange for a fair review.

I love short story collections. They are great starting point for exploring new writers; they are easy to pick up and read not necessary to stay up all night!

Two of the stories first appeared in The New Yorker and I had, by chance, read both of them. And enjoyed them again. Henry has used his intellect to invest successfully in the stock market, building up a very substantial nest egg for his family.

Henry also protects Peter from a school bully and builds Rube Goldberg machines in their tree house. Henry and Susan are both fond of their next-door neighbor and Henry's classmate, Christina Sickleman, who has recently become glum.

Henry sees Christina being abused by her stepfather, Glenn, the local police commissioner. Henry reports the abuse to social services and the school principal, Janice Wilder, but Glenn has connections throughout the local government, and Wilder is reluctant to challenge the commissioner without "conclusive evidence".

Henry is unable to get the authorities to launch a serious investigation that would protect Christina. Henry tells his mother that when someone is in trouble, those who can help must take action.

He develops a detailed plan to rescue Christina that he memorializes in a notebook. After a violent seizure, Henry is taken to the hospital, where he is diagnosed with a brain tumor and undergoes surgery.

Anticipating his death, he tells Peter to give Susan the notebook. Days later, Henry dies in Susan's arms in the hospital. Susan is distraught at Henry's death and has difficulty functioning, but when Peter gives her the notebook, she focuses on Henry's plan.

Susan tries, but fails, to interest a nearby social services agency in opening an investigation. One night, from the window in Peter's bedroom, she sees Glenn in Christina's room and decides to carry out the plan.

The notebook and an accompanying cassette tape describe Henry's step-by-step plan to kill Glenn with a sniper rifle while covering Susan's tracks so that it will be impossible to trace the murder back to her.

Susan's alibi is to be provided by executing the murder while both Christina and Peter are performing at a school talent show. Susan slips away from the talent show and puts the plan into motion.

As she is about to pull the trigger, she realizes that Henry's plan, though ingenious, is the construct of a child, and that she must act as an adult.

She immediately confronts Glenn and tells him that she is going to expose him for what he has done to Christina. Glenn replies that everyone will believe him, not her, and he tells her that he is going to call his police chief to come and bring her in.

At the same time, affected by Christina's dance performance at the talent show, Principal Wilder decides to follow through on the abuse accusation and contacts the authorities.

Glenn returns home, calls his relative at Social Services, and learns that an investigation is being opened into his abuse of Christina.

As the police arrive at his house, Glenn kills himself. Susan legally adopts Christina as her daughter. She also finishes writing one of her children's books, as Henry had urged her to do.

Hurwitz wrote the first draft of the screenplay by The film was eventually optioned by Jenette Kahn , and Sidney Kimmel Entertainment joined as a producer.

Trevorrow and Hurwitz found each other to be congenial, but then Trevorrow was hired to direct Jurassic World.

Another director was considered.
