I'm on the hunt to watch all the films surrounding James Cameron's The Abyss, the only film that wasn't a flop for this concept of a creature deep within the ocean.
DeepStar Six has moments of cleverness, the scene with Richardson is a ripper. I didn't care for the character motivations and some of their decisions are just odd.
Cunningham was an inspired choice for this film, but this was not a horror film and he feels out of his league here. The sea monster is a dud and lacks any menace.
The end scene is exactly like Leviathan so I don't know which film entered production first, but there is a fair call for plagarism, I'm not investigating, the films are quite bad regardless.

Friday the 13th director Sean S. Cunningham directs this science fiction horror monster film that doesn't offer anything new or original, but is nonetheless a fun, entertaining film for the B movie fan.
The film has questionable acting and cheesy dialogue, but for the most part it is a fun film that entertaining.
DeepStar Six is not the best film that Sean S. Cunningham has directed, however it works well enough to a fun, mindless ride if you can forget the fact that it rips off The Abyss and Alien.
Don't expect anything great with this one. However the film isn't as bad as what the reviews have said and it is a bit underrated.
I've always found Cunningham's work after Friday the 13th to be average, and DeepStar Six is most certainly that. This is not a memorable film like the classic Slasher film.
Enjoyable with all its flaws, this is a film that like Leviathan is overlooked due to the fact that it's nothing original.

New on Hulu in November Variety said the film was "diluted Alan Bangs implausibility" due to the monster's appearance being unrealistic rather than threatening, also criticizing the lack of centralized characters.

There's a tinge of edge enhancement and the grain field has a bit of a noisy appearance to it at times - but as a whole, those are relatively very small gripes to smack the score for.
Not having seen this in a few years, I was really impressed with the details. I was also really impressed with the details in production design, you can see which sets just didn't have a budget and which ones did.
Colors are on point allowing for excellent primary pop. Blues and Reds get a lot of play given the aquatic nature and the amount of blood and guts in this show.
Yellows get their pop from the numerous electrical panels. Black levels are pretty good, most of the live actor action on set looks pretty great with deep inky blacks and image depth.
Things can get murky and flatten for some of the effects shots - especially when they'd shoot wet for wet with a model in a fish tank.
Even with what appears to be some slight edge enhancement, banding isn't an issue, it occasionally gives some lines a crunchy feel.
Otherwise, this is a great looking transfer; elements are in great shape without any notable wear and tear. If you don't have that option this is a perfectly good stereo track, but the Neural:X does offer some extra punch where it counts during the action and monster beats.
Dialog is clean and clear throughout without any issues. There's plenty of mood and atmosphere to the mix, allowing for the various sets to exhibit their own claustrophobic vibe.
I love the Harry Manfredini score - it has his feel but is not too much like the extensive work he did for the Friday the 13th series, it's almost like he's trying to ape Goldsmith with the moody interludes before breaking into the horror notes.
Levels are spot on without any issue. When it comes to these fan favorites, Kino Lorber Studio Classics are killing it.
This is an impressive collection of archival and newly produced bonus features to keep fans occupied long after you've already watched through the main feature.
Ported over is the archival audio commentary with Sean S. Cunningham and visual effects supervisor James Isaac.
This is a decent commentary track, but there are long pauses where neither participant says anything at all and you kinda forget you're supposed to be listening to a commentary.
The commentary with writers Lewis Abernathy and Geof Miller is a hoot. That is probably one of the funniest commentaries I've listened to in a while and at the same time be very informative.
The Isolated Score selections with an audio interview with Harry Hanfredini is pretty good as well, again longer interludes before he says anything but still cool.

Greg Evigan makes a nice lead and he has the right looks for his heroic part. Thank God or Cunningham they did not cast a bull like Steven Segal or Chuck Norris for this part, for that would have spoiled everything.
Not at his best here, but I don't mind. Camera and lighting are done in such a way that the interior of the ship as well as the atmosphere look pretty authentic and Sean S.
Cunningham has done a fine job in making his actors move around in it naturally and convincingly. Not a masterpiece, but I am pleased to see a film like this from a man who has done much worse.
