Jul 31, Complete and utter garbage, S. Titanic is a half-assed TV movie that embarrasses itself. There's virtually no attempt at authenticity, as the ship is clearly the Queen Mary, and the interior sets don't look anything like the Titanic.

Additionally, many of the long shots of the ship are just colorized scenes from A Night to Remember and don't match-up with the models or exterior sets.

The performances are universally bad except for maybe David Warner and Susan Saint James , and the historical inaccuracies are beyond egregious; they don't even get the date of the sinking right.

Titanic is a colossal mess that has no understanding of the Titanic disaster, and it shows in every frame.

Meanwhile, Beesley and Goodwin toy with the possibility of embarking on an illicit affair in an empty cabin but decide not to. Goodwin comments that shipboard romances, like shipboard friendships, are meant to end with the voyage.

A third theme is who deserved, or accepted, responsibility for the wrecking of the RMS Titanic. Captain Edward Smith , a veteran White Star captain nearing retirement, is depicted as a masterful leader who nevertheless failed to slow down in spite of being well aware that he was traveling into ice-laden waters.

Shipbuilder Thomas Andrews radiates an almost saintly quality, seeing to the final details of construction and repairs himself, tenderly looking after passengers and crew, and even conversing with a young stewardess about their common hometown of Belfast.

He fully understands the implications of the collision, and his knowledge that he cannot save the ship clearly breaks his heart.

Meanwhile, White Star Line director J. Bruce Ismay wavers between a stance of command and an unwillingness to take responsibility for the sinking.

Identifying himself as a passenger, he defiantly boards a lifeboat, only to experience a nervous breakdown later aboard the R. Carpathia rescuing ship.

Ismay is the only one of these three men who survives, and it is clear that he will never fully recover from the psychological effects and blow to his reputation from the fabled sinking.

The film includes roles on RMA Carpathia particularly the radio operator, Harold Cottam and shows this ship more fully than other film versions.

It shows survivors going onto the Carpathia. The seascape is shown heavy with ice floes. Rather than the sacred " Nearer, My God, to Thee ", the ship band plays jaunty, secular ragtime tunes by Scott Joplin.

Survivors discuss the silence of the disappearance of the ship and absence of screaming. Several philosophise regarding their losses.

Producer William Filmore called it the "thinking man's disaster film". Several of the scenes on the exterior decks, as well as those in the ship's wheelhouse, were filmed on board the later British ocean liner from the s, the retired RMS Queen Mary in Long Beach, California.

Some interior scenes were filmed at the Waldorf and Adelphi historic hotels in London and Liverpool , respectively.

The town of Peel on the Isle of Man served as the Queenstown backdrop. You may later unsubscribe. Create your account Already have an account?

It was a sad day for me When I finally got a chance to read it, I remember really liking it, but now I don't remember if that was because the book was any good, or if I was just in love with it because it talk I went through a stage in elementary school where I was obsessed with all things related to the Titanic.

The author took a genuinley interesting subject and added elements that ruined it. Titanic and witch craft do not go together.

Plus the ship sinking was forshadowed so much that a five year old wou,d pick up on it. Not a good book, I don't reccommend the agony of this story to anyone.

Aug 28, Celine rated it did not like it. Let me be honest and save you the trouble of considering this book. Don't bother reading it.

May 11, Aimee rated it liked it. SOS Titanic is a fictional account of the sinking of Titanic, with some factual information and characters included.

I mostly enjoyed the book. I had to reread some portions as there were lots of sentence fragments which took me out of the story to try to figure out the meanings.

There were two swear words near the end of the book, which honestly could have been left out. The point could have been made in a different way, especially considering this book is marketed for children.

Sep 29, Bethany Lafferty rated it it was amazing Shelves: juvenilefiction , j-ya-historical-fiction. Barry is accompanied by an adult chaperon, Mr.

Scollins, who has a very weak stomach for sea traveling, which allows Barry some freedom to explore the ship where he meets many interesting people.

On this voyage Barry becomes aware of the separations between the classes and struggles to accept the rules regarding them.

When the iceberg hits, will Barry be able to save Frank and Peegan despite their differences? Jan 27, Faith rated it liked it.

SOS Titanic is an excellent historical resource. Bunting did a lot of research about what the Titanic looked like, who was on board, and exactly how and why it sank.

It would be great social studies or research project resource. The book follows the story of fifteen year old, first class passenger Barry and his developing relationship with steerage passenger and developing love interest Pegeen.

The two teens must face the social confines that affect them both while trying to survive the horrific SOS Titanic is an excellent historical resource.

The two teens must face the social confines that affect them both while trying to survive the horrific sinking of the "unsinkable" Titanic.

Foreshadowing is heavy in this book, and the social themes could be further developed in the larger classroom. Apr 27, Teresa DiStefano rated it it was amazing.

This has become my favorite guilty pleasure in terms of a book I could read over and over again without it ever getting boring. The plot is simple and one typically used when representing the Titanic in books and movies friends and lovers being torn apart due to the sinking of the Titanic But what really makes this book something I could continuously read out of pleasure is the characters.

The ending is one that has left me heartbroken, just as many sad books have done in This has become my favorite guilty pleasure in terms of a book I could read over and over again without it ever getting boring.

The ending is one that has left me heartbroken, just as many sad books have done in the past, but this book tears the characters apart, turning all of the characters into heroes in the end and then tearing them apart, making it harder to let them go.

Its a touching story about the separation between social classes and them coming together when they know the end if near, showing their true selves with one another and just trying to save each other, but as the story shows, not everyone can be saved.

Oct 31, Ethan rated it really liked it. Here he meets up with old friends and enemies aboard the biggest vessel of their time. But all things go wrong when the ship collides with an iceberg.

Titanic is a great read for fans of historical fiction, including many elements of history along with several additional story points to keep the story interesting all the way through.

Overall, it was a good book. Oct 02, Henry rated it it was amazing Shelves: reading-royale. I was so tense throughout the book and I loved this book!

It was SO good! You should definitely read this if you like learning about the Titanic. It definitely puts a different look on the story. May 14, Alexander DePinto rated it liked it.

Aug 13, Lisa Lawrence rated it it was amazing. Excellent account. Class differences and discrimination then Aug 23, Stan rated it did not like it.

The book is very uninteresting and bad, I had to do this book for my summer reading. Should have just picked another book.

Dec 15, Mr. Skipper's GT Cafe added it. Feb 29, Caleb rated it it was amazing. This book was really good. There are unlikely friendships formed and learning that you never know when what you thought mattered, no longer seems important.

Or will it be too late to fight a wrong. We all know how it ends. This is a fictionalization of a truly tragic and notable event in history.

True, you know where it all leads to, gets especially depressing towards the end of the book. Some of the scenes and sequences portrayed in the story do not come across as even minutely believable, in terms of how the people reacted to the event as it was happening in real time.

The story made it sound like most of the people in the lower levels were unaware and even yielding to authority that wer We all know how it ends.

The story made it sound like most of the people in the lower levels were unaware and even yielding to authority that were holding them back behind the closed gates, even up to the moment when water began to rise where they were standing.

This would intuitively go against everything I know, when struck in a survival situation and you just get that feeling of uprising danger about overtake you.

The author made the characters on the Titanic seem very docile and nearly half-asleep, until the very moments prior to when the unsinkable ship was just about to be eaten up by the ice-strewn Atlantic.

Of course, some of the more informed passengers were able to get on board a designated lifeboat of which there were only numbered quantities available.

If this story has a redeeming factor is the display of togetherness that connects us all in times like these. This unity that shows the selflessness of true heroes who gave up their life, to save the lives of over seven hundred.

Symbolically, this story can symbolize and put so much into perspective. It shows us that without humility and prudence, even the greatest and most powerful things, are able to be brought down, when no caution is taken into account.

This story really makes you feel like you're there when it's happening. You can easily tell that per the ending, this book is intended for a younger audience, as it really underplays the enormity of terror created during the very moments of the sinking of the Titanic.

He's in first class while a rival family, the Flynns, is in third class. The book is a great blend of fact and fiction. I like how the author worked all the facts into the story.

Barry meets a man who's afraid the Titanic will sink after reading the book "Titan," he finds out that there are only enough lifeboats for half of the people on board, he can't send out a telegram be S.

Barry meets a man who's afraid the Titanic will sink after reading the book "Titan," he finds out that there are only enough lifeboats for half of the people on board, he can't send out a telegram because the operators are being swamped with messages about icebergs, etc.

There is also some social commentary on the way first class passengers were treated versus the way steerage passengers were treated.

It's done in a way that doesn't come across as blatant fact stating and, since this is a children's book, it's a nice way for kids to learn more about the tragedy.

That's not the main focus of the story, but it's more prominent in the second half of the book. There are a few times while reading this that I felt very sad.

I couldn't imagine what the passengers were thinking and I just wish things had been handled better. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in the Titanic and t anyone who likes a good story.

I would read this again. Oct 19, Madz rated it liked it Shelves: book-groups. I think the overall book was great, yet I thought it gave a few too many spoilers.

It was not one of my favorite books, but I definitely enjoyed reading it with my book group. The Beginning: Barry is a young boy who is living in Ireland with his grandparents so he can go to school in Ireland.

Then, it's time for him to head to New York to be reunited with his parents. Lucky for him, he gets first class tickets on the Titanic.

The Middle: Life on the Titanic is great! Except for a few encounters with I think the overall book was great, yet I thought it gave a few too many spoilers.

Except for a few encounters with his enemies from Ireland, he is having a great time! From Barry's cabin steward, Watley, from a superstitious man, who believes the Titanic is like the Titan from a book he read just before he made the trip.

An iceberg hits the Titanic and the unsinkable, becomes sinkable. The Ending: People are scurrying, doing their best just to make it into one of the 16 life boats.
