action film romantic new 2017 Vampiros De John CarpenterWhat's not good: This is a movie starring anti-heroes, and they really come across as scumbags, so it can be had to root for them.
While that can be a cool concept, it does go a few hits too far. Some of Montoya's rough handling of Katrina makes sense given that she's been bitten by a vampire, but it does go too far.
Montoya is still beating Katrina even as it becomes clear he's developing feelings for her, and a late-movie turn where they even love each other just feels icky.
Crow is still threatening to murder his priest far past the point where it's really even helpful to his cause, and the priest begins to trust Crow rather than being permanently scarred.
A low-rent production with an only-okay script doesn't help. You start to realize this movie is filmed in the Southwest because deserts are cheap to film in and don't require permits.
The master enemy is totally generic, his performance does nothing, and the "vampire vision" looks like a 90s nu-metal video replete with soundtrack.
So our heroes are scumbags, our villain is almost a placeholder, and there's a music video scene where vampires climb out of the dirt to 90s nu-metal.
This can have audiences laughing or groaning rather than getting excited. Overall: As a dumb popcorn action movie, Vampires works for me.
I like the idea of scumbag anti-heroes being hired by the Catholic Church to root out vampires. It's a great spin on the idea that it takes a monster to kill a monster.
But the scumbag factor is a little too high so I don't like the characters, the production is too cheap, and the late 90s music video portions are not going to win anyone over.
I still watch it every few years, especially for the performances, but it's overall nowhere near Carpenter's masterpieces. Most people agree they'd rather watch Ghosts of Mars - another stinker - but I'm a little partial to Vampires just because of the lead performances.

The sets are just regular places around the mid-west of America and what money went into the production must have gone into the sparsely interspersed gory moments.
However, what possibly raises this above every other similar film of the day is the setting. Recovering from an ambush that killed his entire team, a vengeful vampire slayer must retrieve an ancient Catholic relic that should it be acquired by vampires will allow them to walk in sunlight.
This is yet another fantastic horror in John Carpenter's long list of awesome movies over the years, he tackles the vampire genre in his own way and gives us a cool classic horror, all the Carpenter touches are here, including a great music score, the cast is all good, James Woods and Daniel Baldwin lead the way and Sheryl Lee is sexy eye candy, there is plenty of bloody gore and violence, vampires on fire and some nudity, plenty of cool vampire slaying action, most part its good old school practical effects too which look great.
This is certainly one of the coolest and fun vampire movies from over the years and don't take itself too seriously like some, make sure you check this out especially as it now looks so great on Blu-ray.

Relaeased back in , John Carpenters take on the vampire genre was a solid moderate hit, which while not being his best work, is certainly a sturdy enough macho action horror flick which plays out like a Sam Peckenpah western.
While being quite low on scares and focusing more on action, I have found that this has actually improved somewhat over time and it rattles along at a pretty fast pace with not many dull moments.
The lead Vampire is played by the relatively unknown tv actor Thomas Ian Griffith who is actually pretty effective and looks the part.
As I have said this is not Carpenters best but it is certainly far from his worst check out Escape From L. A or Ghosts from Mars to experience rock bottom and there is a lot of fun to be had in its mins running time.
This Blu Ray release from Indicator is a nice crisp transfer with a great little booklet complete with an essay and praise for the film by critic and horror buff Kim Newman.
Report abuse. James Woods plays the lead character Jack Crow who leads a team of vampire killers hired by the Vatican. One night after a slay the team heads back at their motel to have a party where they get a visit from the head vampire Valek Thomas Ian Griffith and he kills almost Crow's entire team and all of the hookers and partygoers.
Jack can escape with one of his teammates and a hooker who's been bitten and finds out they've been betrayed, but who's responsible. The rest follows in a good modern horror movie.
Perfect HD picture quality and great surround mix in a nice Collector's Edition. Also is included the DVD with the same menu and extra's.

Tension and originality get sacrificed for straightforward B movie luridness. If Carptenter made this before he had a string of flops and disappointments he might have been a little more daring.

However, the characters aren't written very well and the performances bear that out. But the vampire lore of the film is quite interesting and keeps the film engaging.
